TransCanada Corporation has announced in a blog post the culmination of a year-long trial of IntelliView camera systems for real-time pipeline leak detection and real-time perimeter intrusion detection at one of their Alberta Keystone Pipeline pump stations.

IntelliView’s selection in the project in late 2015 served as a platform to demonstrate the capability of IntelliView technologies in actual field scenarios to determine their implementation viability for improving pipelines safety and reliability. While initial findings look promising, analysis and review by TransCanada’s leak detection team is still ongoing.

“We are delighted TransCanada saw potential in our video-based leak and intrusion detection solutions and had the opportunity to complement their existing monitoring infrastructure with our technologies in the testing,” says IntelliView Executive Chairman, Bill Hews. “The progress is encouraging and we look forward to working on the next steps.”

A monitoring screen shows the IntelliView leak analytic software in action, and the analytic regions set up along the pump station.

The IntelliView system featured high quality thermal imaging, high definition color camera and proprietary analytics designed to generate immediate alerting of defined anomalies.

“As part of our extensive R&D program, we’re also interested in testing new technologies that might enhance our existing system like the monitoring system offered by IntelliView,”says Erik Tatarchuk, TransCanada VP, Liquid Pipeline Operations.

The program was partly funded by the Alberta Innovates – Technology Futures Product Demonstration Program.

Outside of the oil and gas, the IntelliView leak detection system can be successfully applied to other industrial and environmentally sensitive settings, including mine sites, water crossings, chemical refineries, water treatment plants, and storage facilities.
